Two years ago I read THIS article and that was how this trip all started. I wanted to see the "standing up rocks" dubbed by the Apache before it became a national park and the crowds swooped in. They say March and April are peak times for the park and I chose the first week of March. I had no problem with crowds or parking and the weather was perfect. Bonus: No Mosquitoes!
My friend Ally!
Hiking the Echo Canyon trail was the highlight of the park for me. I am so happy I did the full loop as suggested by my lovely hosts at the Dreamcatcher Inn. They even supplied my hiking poles (I forgot to pack mine). The back end of the hike provides these gorgeous formations.
I was able to practice my stalking and tracking techniques while in the park. I am overjoyed I had the good fortune to follow Coati Mundi for a few hours.
Sunset at Massai Point
The area is also Dark Sky Country. It is so dark that you can't see your hand in front of your face.
Sunrise at Massai point.
In the distance you can see the crater that is left from the Volcano that created this martian landscape.
I absolutely loved this park and the Dreamcatcher Inn. If you decide to visit you will not find a better and closer place to stay. Also keep an eye on your gas because there are no gas stations nearby. Also stock up on your provisions as there are no grocery stores either. If you really want to get away from it all then this is the spot!
