Machu Picchu Archeological Site

The iconic mountain in the background that is most recognizable in photos is named Huayna Picchu (Waynapicchu) and is 8,924ft and features over 1,600 steep, uneven Inca steps and vertigo-inducing sections like the "Stairs of Death".

Above and below is the Temple of the Condor.  A natural rock formation combined with carved stones forming a three-dimensional representation of the Andean condor, a symbol of the spiritual world

We came upon a large group of people meditating inside one of the temple ruins.

This baby llama was absolutely hysterical. He was hopping around and running back and forth to try and figure out how to get to it's parents.

Our lovely guide Delia spoiled us the entire time we were in the Sacred Valley and Cusco. She is a wealth of knowledge and was able to get us into several places normally you could not go.

Above is the Royal Tomb, located under the Temple of the Sun.

Above is the Temple of the Sun, a semicircular structure build over a cave that served as a gateway to the underworld. It's windows align perfectly with the sun during the solstices.  Pictured above is the actual Machu Picchu Mountain, the highest peak overlooking the citadel at 10,111 ft. and is often hidden by clouds.

This tree is 400 years old! Above is the Temple of Three Windows representing the 3 levels of the Inca world.

Pictured above is Sacred Rock. It was carved to resemble the surrounding mountains and used as an altar for religious offerings. you will find many coins and coca leaves left around this area.

The bugs in South America are on steroids. I can't help but think the picture below is a sacrificial altar.  This Mountain above is called Huchuy Picchu meaning small/young mountain.

if you plan to go to Machu Picchu you must plan way ahead as some routes sell out very quickly. I HIGHLY recommend The Perfect Route to help plan your trip.
