Yellowstone- West Thumb

America's first National Park. It is not just about Old Faithful. There is a bunch of great natural wonders throughout the park. It is hard to pick a favorite spot but if I had to, West Thumb is pretty great.

We entered from the south after leaving Grand Teton and the following evening exited to the North to Montana.

We stopped at West Thumb before we turned in for the night. It was so cool we went back and started there again the next morning.

Sunset over Yellowstone Lake

We stayed overnight at Pahaska Tepee. No cell service however they had an excellent gift shop and restaurant. We checked in just in time to grab a drink and order some elk medallions and Buffalo meatloaf. Best meal of the trip! This is the first place outside of the East Entrance of the park and I highly recommend!

West Thumb Geyser Basin is full of Mudpots.

Mudpots are acidic features with a limited water supply. Some microorganisms use hydrogen sulfide, which rises from deep within the earth, as an energy source. They help convert the gas to sulfuric acid, which breaks down rock to wet clay mud and creates the area’s smell. The pungent odor of rotten eggs is caused by the hydrogen sulfide gas. Various gases escape through the wet clay mud, causing it to bubble.
