Old Stone Church Cemetery

I drove past this cemetery and immediately turned around! I just knew I had to get out and photograph it. I got soaked but it was well worth it!

In the south you see a lot of confederate graves. Feel what you want about it, but it happened and is a part of the south. It is hard to get away from the reminders of the past in old southern cemeteries. Luckily no one has taken to desecrating graves so these memorials to the dead stay in tact.

As a "Damn Yankee" I have conflicted feelings about Confederate symbols. I do not agree with destroying memorials and pretending the civil war never happened but I also don't agree with celebrating the confederacy. We learn from our mistakes not by burying our heads in the sand or we will be doomed to repeat them. After living in the South as long as I have, I get that some of these people have deep roots and this is their family history so it can be very touchy. You still come across the rednecks that believe "the south will rise again" and Yankees who think they are better than everyone else, I chose to not befriend either of those types. As a former Northerner I have mellowed out on my views. I see through the eyes of both. It took a very long time and I feel I am a better person for having lived the culture of New York and Atlanta. Having the opportunity gives me great perspective that most people never will have. This is why I feel it is our duty as human beings to travel and experience other cultures to understand and connect with others. You truly cannot judge until you walk a mile in someone else's shoes. I don't mean go to a resort and never leave it either. I mean take a bus, walk around, eat the local food, talk to people. Stay in an AirBnB and feel what it is to be where you are visiting. Ignorance means lack of knowledge. It can be cured!
