I had the pleasure of experiencing Yayoi Kusma's infinity mirrors exhibit at the High. I knew it was going to be great but I was truly blown away by it all.

Her sculptures above are made of cotton, wood and fabric.

Kusama has lived in a mental institution in Japan since 1977. Conflicting reports say she is there by her own free will and her mental illness is brought on by her Graves Disease, but it is most likely she suffers from Bipolar disorder and psychosis and the Graves disease was a by product of the mental illness and child abuse at the hand of her mother. She works out of a studio across from the hospital and writes in her hospital room at night. Some of the best parts of the exhibit are the photographs of her in New York when she was younger. Her work is obsessive and beautiful. There are 6 infinity rooms and the 7th room begins the exhibit as a pure white furnished space that is slowly transforming over time as visitors pass through and add a dot to the room to "obliterate" the space. The exhibit has only just opened and is already vastly covered. I get to visit it again toward the end of it's run. I look forward to seeing how it has transformed since.
