What started off as a rainy day turned into a quick trip up to the mountains to throw up a tent somewhere and spend the night in the woods.

About 4.5 miles down a dirt road not far from the German Alpine town of Helen is Horse Trough Falls. The official primitive campground is closed for the winter but there are plenty of make shift spots along the creek and the road to pop a tent or a hammock up and claim your own little slice of heaven.

The mighty Chattahoochee River is a mere creek in this part of the region.

I was intrigued with the surrounding vegetation and the abundance of cracks, crevices and holes I found along our campsite.

We missed the annual fall cub scout camping trip so my son had to get in an overnight camp out and he had to plan it, plan and cook the meal, start the fire not using matches and pick out the spot for the tent and help pitch it.

Due to the rain we had to bring our own wood but we were careful to burn it all. You are not supposed to bring foreign wood (even if it did come only a couple of hours away) and if you do, you better make sure you burn every bit of it or bring it back with you.

Getting the fire started (with Dad's help) was much more fun than setting up the tent

While dinner was cooking we played and epic game of Star Wars Duels that never really quite got finished.

The next morning was breakfast followed by BB guns!

We packed up everything and before went for a hike to the falls. I think we picked up and brought home more trash from around this site than we brought with us. People are jerks. I am a firm believer in the Boy Scout Motto- Leave No Trace!

This was one of the best camping trips we have ever done. I haven't done a trip like this since before I had kids and I hope it will be a regular thing.
