Monkey Massacre Memorial
The legend goes...
A circus train crashed in Duluth, Georgia (where I work) in the early 20th century. A few dozen Monkeys escaped and scampered into nearby trees. Local farmers had never seen Monkeys before and did not know what they were so they gunned every one of them down.
Fast forward...an unknown local artist created cement monkey statues as a homage to these monkeys and to be a reminder that just because you do not know what something is, you should not destroy it.
The statues reside off the wooded trails inside the Autry Mill Nature Center. There exact location and formation tends to change but mostly they can be found in a circle.
