A Postcard from the Edge

We lost many famous icons from my childhood in 2016.

David Bowie and Prince really struck a cord,

But losing Carrie Fisher and then, her mother, brought me to actual tears.

I was in the shower with my little waterproof fish radio on this morning, like every morning, listening to the news, weather and traffic to prepare for the day and drive ahead, when I heard Debbie Reynolds pretty much died of a broken heart. Her last words were "I just want to be with my daughter" and 30 minutes later while planning her funeral had a stroke and died.

As a mother it just hit me like a ton of bricks. My worst fear is losing one of my kids. I honestly don't think I could handle it and hope that if I did I would soon die too. Is that sick? I don't think so. I think it would spare the pain left behind from the loss that would never heal.

Carrie Fisher was my first role model. She was the first idol I could ever relate to. She was a princess, but not like a Disney princess, even though now she is the best Disney princess ever!

She was a warrior, a fighter, a smart ass and I wanted to be her.

She never let mental illness get the best of her.

She never needed anyone's approval and it made her relatable.

The stars will be less bright in the galaxy.
