Whitewater Draw, Arizona
Winter is the time to visit this wildlife refuge. Over 20,000 Sandhill Cranes migrate to the area, along with many blackbirds, several duck species and raptors like Barred owls, Bald Eagles, Golden Eagles and Peregrine Falcons. This was something I only learned about from locals and it was one of the best wildlife experiences I had ever been privy to.
I arrived before the sun rose and it was so dark I could not see anything. I followed the sound of the birds and waited for the most brilliant light. It was stunning. So much in fact I came back another day to watch the birds fly back late morning.
