The Blue Hole

Caye Caulker from the air!

The Blue Hole in Belize is what put the country on my radar to begin with. I could not even think about Belize without somehow figuring the Blue Hole into the trip. I knew Belize City was the gateway, and I also knew that was where I did not want to stay. I heard great things about the Belizean islands and I wanted to be as close to the barrier reef as possible. Caye Caulker was as good as it gets. You could see the reef from our balcony. The reef is one of the best snorkel spots in the world. It did not disappoint! I wanted to see the Blue Hole and the lighthouse reef. The area is unbelievably amazing. The only way to really grasp it is from a small 6 seater plane.

The blue is the bluest blue I have ever seen and so many shades!

Coming up on the hole...

The Great Blue Hole is a World Heritage Site. It is located 43 miles from Belize City and near the center of the Lighthouse Reef. It is 1043 ft (318M) wide and 407ft (124m) deep. A sinkhole created by glacial activity, it was made famous by Jacques Cousteau who declared it one of the top dive spots in the world.

Shipwreck on the east side of the atoll.

Due to the lack of air in the small plane, long length of the flight and the motion I recommend taking some dramamine before your flight. I was ok, but have been sick on long helicopter rides before, my daughter felt quite sick about halfway through. These scenic flights are not cheap or easy to get. We were on a list for a while to be matched up because they do not fly without a full plane unless you want to pay a ton of money to have a private flight. We used Tsunami Adventures. Our pilot was meh and didn't point anything out, we were kinda on our own. Regardless it was breathtaking.
