Dyngus Day

The day after Easter is Dyngus Day!

What is Dyngus Day you ask...well this is my first DD and I will do my best to explain it.

Dyngus Day is a Polish celebration marked by the passing of Lent. It is always the first Monday after Easter. The day is spent with Boys chasing girls with water guns, buckets or other containers of water. Also the men will swat ladies with pussy willows. Tradition was for the ladies to have their revenge on Tuesday, by throwing dishes back at the boys but recently it has changed into more or less the women and men having squirt guns fights and smacking each other with pussy willows.

Some friends have been putting on a small Dyngus Day party for a few years but this year they decided to rent a venue and make it official. There was food...lots of kielbasa, sauerkraut, caramelized onions and several varieties of perogies. Tons of beer from Buffalo, NY, where apparently Dyngus Day is huge. Butter shaped as lambs and lamb cake are also traditional treats.

There were dirndls and polka lessons and my favorite...the chicken dance!

Young, old, friends and strangers gathered for the fun and I made a few new adventure buddies as well.

I see a budding tradition in my future.
