Valentine's Day RebelsValentine's Day is one of those holidays that are meh. We don't do a lot but I do like to get flowers. We started the Whole 30 diet on February 6 and recently discovered (though I suspected this all along) that our son is allergic to milk. Food options are extremely limited in our house right now. No milk chocolate anything! What do you do on a Hallmark holiday that promotes candy and expensive/rich dinners when you are dairy, wheat, bean, gluten and sugar free? You go hiking!
My husband, son and I grabbed some water, larabars and the camera and sat in traffic for way too long to climb to the top of Stone Mountain and catch the sunset. Sadly my daughter could not join us...she is fighting strep throat and needs to stay far far away and in bed.
We barely made it! I was half tempted to just turn around in traffic and go home but either way we would had still been sitting in horrendous traffic and decided if worse came to worse we would hike in the dark, which we ended up doing for the way down.
I had not been up top at night since I was a teenager. There was a group of people with candles and food and 2 separate boot camps groups planking and doing yoga in the dark at the top. It was kind of cool. We had our snacks at the top, took in the view and made our way back down. It was a quick 2.25 mile hike but it is a decent incline. Especially when your 11 year old is practically running up the mountain and you are trying to keep up!
This was better than overcrowded and overpriced dinner (which we don't do anyway because crowds!). Maybe this will be a new tradition?
