About 45 minutes south of Charleston is my favorite South Carolina beach. Botany Bay on Edisto Island is 3 miles of undeveloped beach front. Only this tract has been left undisturbed, providing coastal habitat for a wide range of wildlife species, including loggerhead sea turtles, which are some of my favorite creatures. Erosion on Botany Bay Beach has left a “boneyard” of dead trees along the sand, creating a unique coastline you’ve got to walk to fully appreciate. Shell collection is prohibited; as a result the beach is full of whelks, scallops, clams, mussels, oysters, sea stars and sand dollars. I have only seen shells of this magnitude in one other place, Sanibel Island. There is ruins from the areas plantation days that I did not have time to explore. I am hoping to get back here soon and poke around some more.
