Saying No 52/15
This week I am supposed to list the things I want to say no to. Some of these things I cannot say out loud but it did feel good to write them down. So many things I have to say yes to but want to say no to. Most are necessities like work and cleaning. Some are deeply personal. I think we can all relate to wanting to say no but having to say yes. I have been much better at saying no. A few years back I was very overwhelmed. I have gotten better at learning how to manage my life. 1. Work- there are certain jobs I want to say no to. Mostly I have weeded out the type of work I am not willing to take on anymore. At least not at this time of my life. I need to say yes to my family and no to time consuming work that puts my family life in jeopardy. 2. Spending time with toxic people is something I want to say no to and I have. Life is much better when you are around people who lift you up or at least, don't drag you down. I don't want to be a negative Nancy. I find myself getting sucked into drama and a black hole of ugliness if I am around it. I have been unfriending, hiding and just generally not socializing with people who make me feel bad. I don't have much time as it is and the time I have I want to be around people who can laugh at themselves and not be so judgemental of others. 3. I want to say no to my son's homework. Every day it is a chore and a fight. Middle school has been terribly unorganized and I find myself spending half the night trying to figure what his homework is and then the other half staying on top of him to get it done. When you have a child who struggles anyway and just plain is not interested it begins to weigh on you. I feel like it is all he does or all he does to try to get out of it. The weeks are long in our home these days and I feel my self spiraling into a deep depression over school. Something has to give. I can't just say no...but boy do I want to. 4. I wish I could never grocery shop again. It is my least favorite thing to do and seems like I am always doing it. I despise it. 5. Finally...I wish I could say no to mopping floors. Seriously would rather scrub a toilet than clean a floor. I am supposed to practice saying no to things that stress me out. My floor unfortunately has heard the word no for far too long and my socks would like me to say yes. I did say no to homework on Wednesday. It was the anniversary of my step fathers death and the day we were supposed to have been flying back from Cuba. I decided to say no to work, homework and responsibilities in general that day and it felt great! Spent the day with my husband exploring and sipping on wine. Sometimes you just got to say no to adulting.
