Uncle Remus

Every photographers worst nightmare... No Photos allowed inside.

I was able to take a few outside before my son discovered he had a tick embedded in his skin. Yay Spring!

Uncle Remus and His Tales of Br'er Rabbit are a collection of tales, songs and oral folklore from southern African Americans. Most famous of which is Disney's Song of the South. At the time of their publications they were wildly popular and accepted. It wasn't too long before the stereotyped character of Uncle Remus became viewed as demeaning and racist.

The woman inside giving us the tour was as sweet as Georgia peaches and as southern as they come. She was a plethora of knowledge about the history behind Joel Chandler Harris and the events that led to his learning of the tales and publishing them. In today's standards the history is quite controversial but it is history. You can't stop it, or hide it but you CAN learn from it.
