Night Owl 5K
Atlanta Wild Animal Rescue Effort is my favorite local charity and also the recipient of my Amazon Smile Charity. They had a 5k fundraiser featuring their ambassador animals as cheerleaders along the race route. The race was held at Panola Mountain State Park. We arrived early so we could explore a bit and have extra time to meet the animals.
I can never turn down an opportunity to see an owl or 5.
This was our first mother/son 5k. Neither one of us trained for it. I have been running here and there but not on a regular basis and he has not ran at all this year. He is usually training for the Peachtree Jr. in the spring but now that he is in middle school there is not a running club anymore. I figured we would wing it and just have fun.
The trail was quite hilly. The only flat part was this boardwalk where the animals were.
I managed to coax Brody through the race by convincing him he had a chance to win a medal since he was ahead of most of the kids. Each time he would slow down or complain I would let him walk for a few seconds then tell him I saw a kid behind us catching up. Whatever works right?!
Guess what! He did get a medal. 3rd place for his age group 12-16. Despite the look on his face, he was beyond excited.
I am beyond proud of him!
