52 Lists of Happiness Project

List the movies, books and TV shows that make me feel happy... boy this is a really long list!

I have committed to only posting 5 things off of my written list each week but I am going to deviate a little this week and post 5 from each category so you can get a better feel for what entertains me and if you are looking for something maybe you haven't read or seen yourself to look into.

1. Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson

I have never read anything that made me laugh out loud consistently while hitting me in all the feels. Read this book, don't get it from the library, buy it. You will want to re-read it. You will want your friends to read it. Buy it for your kindle so you can read it all the time.

2. A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

Another book that made me laugh and cry. The story is so unique and well written and the characters are perfectly awkward.

3. The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

So good I immediately went out and got the graphic novel volumes and re-read it in this form.

4. Tuesday's with Morrie by Mitch Albom

This was a gift by my best friend's step dad. Now, dealing with aging parents, illnesses and deaths this book hits me in the gut in a good way.

5. Damned by Chuck Palahniuk

I loved this book and Doomed probably more than a normal person should. I was hooked from the start when this 13yr old girl walks into Hell, unsure of how she died and why exactly she is in Hell but everything that happens next will keep you turning the pages and wanting more. It made me want to read more of his books but I never did find that I really liked anything else he wrote that much.

1. Stranger Things

I am not a big TV watcher but there are a few shows that I am completely addicted to, or have been in the past. Stranger Things speaks to me on so many levels. I brings me back to my childhood like for real. I was the kids age at the time this show takes place. The show is inspired by events that happened on Long Island where I was living at the time in 83-84. The show is shot where I live now. One of my very good friends does the set dec for the show. Those child actors are A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! This is the show that has got my son into watching horror. He is sucked in. Like we binged season 1 and 2 in less than 3 days. He has never binged a show before. Wynona Ryder... my 80's idol and beetlejuice queen. Nuff said.

2. The Walking Dead

Another show shot around where I live and employs several friends. But besides had me at Norman Reedus. I was team Daryl Dixon before anyone thought he was cool. Dude...he is a Boondock all time favorite movie and I have been a silly fan girl since 1999! And zombies! Sure, now zombies are kinda old hat, but I had been a zombie fan girl since my big brother forced me to watch the original Dawn of the Dead in 1978 when I was 6! This show isn't all about zombies though, but when it is they have some hella good special effects. The acting is awesome and no one is safe. Now we got Negan...aka you will always be Denny to me... and I love to hate this guy. 2 of my top 5 hotties in one show. Count me in.

3. Game of Thrones

I didn't start this until there were 3 complete seasons finished. I kept hearing about it and Shane and I had all 3 on a flash drive and were like well, let's see what all the hype it about. Spoiler alert! When they kill the main character at the end of the first season on the very last episode we were like WTF!? Then it was on. The characters are so deep, the plots, the evil, man I have never hated anyone in a show as much as I have hated Joffrey and Cersei and of course Ramsey. At least when people die they die very brutally. I have actually cheered and high fived over deaths watching this show. I have also screamed at the TV. All the stress is worth it just to watch Tyrion.

4. Lost

This was the first show that ever sucked me in. I never made plans on a Wednesday night for years. Did I like the way it ended? No but I was so invested I had to watch.

5. Grey's Anatomy

I bet you didn't expect to see that one. That is unless you are one of the girls who used to watch it every Thursday with me for a while (until we drank too much wine and had to stop meeting on week nights). I only stream now so I don't watch like I used to but I still keep up with this show. It is my guilty pleasure. Nothing will ever beat the seasons with George and of course Denny...swoon...I ugly cried when he died and then I stalked him on super natural but he was killed off there too. Now I stalk his movies and I get him on TWD.

1. What We Do in the Shadows.

This movie I can watch over and over. We quote this constantly around my house.

"We're Werewolves, not Swear-Wolves."
2. Star Wars (all) knew that one was coming. In order of which I like best to the 3 we have to mention because they are part of the story.
Empire, Star Wars ( new hope ), Force Awakens, Rogue One, Jedi, III, I, II. Stars Wars is a part of my childhood, it is a part of me. It is more than a movie for me. I literally get chills when I hear that music. I am That girl. I am not going to defend it, or justify it. It is what it is. My mom took me to the opening night of it when I was 5 and we were both hooked. I had all the toys. Other kids had a Barbie dream house, I had a death star. Now I take my mom and the rest of my family to opening night every December to see the new ones. I even teared up during Force Awakens. I ran the first ever Disney Star Wars half Marathon. I have a 501st worthy cosplay Rey costume. I don't have all the books, I don't have all the toys, I just am a huge fan of the movies and they make me happy.
3. Boondock Saints
I loooooove this movie! Everything about this movie speaks to me. The dark humor, the gore, the language and I melt like butter when I hear an Irish accent. This has over the top action and more quotable lines than any other movie in this genre. Sure Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Friday and the Hangover are more famous quotable funny/dark humor movies (they made my list also) but this one... this one more defines my type on entertainment.
"And Shepherds we shall be For Thee my Lord, for Thee Power hath descended forth from Thy hand Our feet may swiftly carry out Thy commands. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In nomine Patri, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti."
4. Evil Dead II
Not really a zombie movie but undead for sure. Evil Dead is hilarious. I loved all 3, the show and I did not hate the remake. Seeing Evil Dead II in the theaters with my punk rock high school friends was such a poignant moment. This movie is pure joy of the sickest kind.
"I'll swallow your soul"
5. Brigitte Jones Diary
Ha! Another one I bet you did not see coming. On my whole list there were 3 chick flicks. Amelie was very close to be listed in this place. Garden State being the other, sort of as close to chick flick as I get (the music kicks ass) BJD makes the top 5 because is does what the list asks. Makes me happy. She is awkward. The story is well written. I also watched this with Shane when we were just starting to date. The song at the end of this movie is our wedding song. It just makes me all warm inside.
"I don't think you're an idiot at all. I mean, there are elements of the ridiculous about you. Your mother's pretty interesting. And you really are an appallingly bad public speaker. And, um, you tend to let whatever's in your head come out of your mouth without much consideration of the consequences... But the thing is, um, what I'm trying to say, very inarticulately, is that, um, in fact, perhaps despite appearances, I like you, very much. Just as you are. "
And that last little line my husband used to quote me all the time when we were first dating...though he doesn't remember now but it is why I love this stupid girly movie and that song.
